  • US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday that the US and Greece, a strong and model NATO ally, are launching new counterterrorism information sharing between their law enforcement agencies. Furthermore, Rubio added that Greece has been an important NATO ally to the US, offering key military facilities to safeguard security in the Eastern Mediterranean, while also leading an EU maritime mission to protect commercial shipping in the Red Sea. He added that Greece will receive USD 4bn to support a long-term defence plan aimed at increasing interoperability between the two militaries and to “explore future opportunities for defence industrial base cooperation.” Furthermore, Rubio stood by US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle after US senators expressed concerns over allegations that she had threatened that the US could use its influence to undermine the Greek government. Asked if her conduct was in compliance with State Department ethics, Rubio said: “Suffice it to say, our embassy here is doing a great job. Our ambassador has been a strong ambassador here.”

  • According to Kathimerini, the Ionian Regional Council has approved an environmental and social impact assessment for a planned exploratory gas well west of Corfu, bringing the project a step closer to drilling. The project must now secure an environmental permit from the Environment and Energy Ministry. Drilling is scheduled to begin in April 2027 under the supervision of Energean, which will remain the consortium’s operator until the operation is completed. ExxonMobil holds a 60% stake in the venture, followed by Energean with 30% and Helleniq Energy with 10%.
According to consortium sources, if gas deposits are discovered, four additional wells will be required to confirm the findings and determine the extent of the deposit. Each well would require a separate environmental permit.
