Christodoulides to Brief National Council on New York Contacts on Cyprus Problem

Macro/Political:

• Left-wing former PM Alexis Tsipras, whose new ELAS party is second in opinion polls, on Tuesday repeated claims that the governing conservatives exploited EU farm subsidies to boost their electoral support. Furthermore, in a speech to livestock farmers in Western Peloponnese, the former PM accused Mitsotakis of playing a central role in the OPEKEPE EU farm subsidy scandal. Tsipras claimed that the funds were misused, with the help of successive agriculture ministers, to strengthen ND’s influence among rural populations, adding that the scandal had hurt honest farmers.

• According to Naftemporiki, the total amount which is going to be available till the end of the year which can be given as a subsidy for the businesses for investments to change the production model of the country will be approximately EUR 12.8bn. This planning is based on the post-Recovery Fund era, with the aim of ensuring that there is no period with a funding gap. In this context, financing tools from the Hellenic Development Bank are being expanded, calls under the development law schemes are being accelerated, while EquiFund II and the Modernisation Fund have also been activated. The programmes and financing tools that businesses have or will have available by the end of the year provide grants, subsidies, tax exemptions and loans with particularly favourable repayment terms.

• President Christodoulides will today brief all members of the National Council on the contacts he held during his visit to New York regarding the Cyprus problem. Yesterday, the President said in a speech that there are difficulties, problems, and challenges, which the government does not overlook, but that this does not constitute a deadlock. He also added that efforts are being made by the EU towards Turkey.

• According to Energy Minister Michael Damianos, negotiations between Cyprus and Israel on an agreement concerning the common natural gas reservoir located between the Cypriot Aphrodite field and the Israeli Ishai field will continue in the coming days. The discussions, which are taking place at a technical level, involve experts from both countries and their legal advisers, along with the companies managing the two reservoirs.

• In July 2026, the Industrial Production Index reached 129.2 units, recording an increase of 1.5% compared to July 2025. For the period January- July 2026, the index recorded an increase of 1.6% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
