- During yesterday’s meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the two leaders conducted a comprehensive review of bilateral Greek–Turkish relations over the past two years.
Among other points, Mitsotakis emphasized that “after all, as neighbouring countries, we are called upon to manage our problems with calmness and responsibility,” adding that despite existing disagreements, the two sides must avoid entering crises and tensions. He also referred to the temporary issuance of short-term tourist visas to Turkish nationals and their families for visits to 12 Aegean islands and requested the European Commission’s approval for the program’s renewal.
Furthermore, Mitsotakis highlighted the very good cooperation between the two countries on migration, noting that flows in the Aegean have dropped by nearly 60%. He added that both sides aim to expand cooperation in other areas, particularly bilateral trade, with the two leaders setting an ambitious target of reaching EUR 10 billion in bilateral trade.
For his part, President Erdogan reaffirmed the substance of his joint statements with Mitsotakis and noted that both sides would continue making every possible effort to increase bilateral trade. He also stressed that they once again discussed, with clarity and sincerity, their respective positions on the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean. Finally, Erdogan stated that although existing issues are complex, they are not irresolvable on the basis of international law, provided there is goodwill, constructive dialogue, and a genuine desire for a solution.

- Cyprus is leaning toward accepting Donald Trump’s invitation to attend his Peace Council in Washington, a sharp contrast to its decision to avoid last month’s Davos Summit invitation. The government considers that Trump’s council focuses exclusively on Gaza and does not have the authority to replace the United Nations in dispute resolution.
Additionally, according to StockWatch, the Cypriot government believes the council’s terms of reference are aligned with UN Security Council Resolution 2803 on the operation of a Peace Council for Gaza and are therefore not incompatible with the UN framework.
