GREECE

Macro/Political:

  • Meridiam, a French investment group, signed an agreement yesterday at the Maximos Mansion to acquire a majority stake in the Greece–Cyprus interconnection project. The agreement reflects the Greek government’s assessment that the French group can help secure progress on the project by shifting risk to Paris, which will now be expected to address what Greek officials describe as the main obstacle: Turkish objections.
Furthermore, the Greek Prime Minister noted that, “The entry of France’s Meridiam is a strong vote of confidence in Greece’s energy sector. We are joining forces in a European project of common interest.” He added that the GSI would end Cyprus’ energy isolation while strengthening energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean and enhancing Europe’s resilience in the energy sector.
