Macron visited Cyprus and Greece amid tensions in the Middle East

  • French President Emmanuel Macron made a brief stopover on Crete while returning from Cyprus to visit a French aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean. Macron met Greece’s Defence Minister Nikos Dendias at the Souda air base. After the meeting, Dendias said that “the presence of President Macron today in Cyprus and Crete sends a clear message”, highlighting the importance of the strategic relationship between the two countries, as well as the strong interest of the EU’s biggest military power in the region.

  • During the trilateral meeting between the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, Macron stated that anyone considering an attack on Cyprus would, in effect, be attacking Europe. Furthermore, he added that the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and its battle group were operating in waters close to Cyprus. Macron also said that France had deployed the frigate Languedoc and a Mistral air-defence unit to the region.
