Greek Minister of Finance has been elected as president of Eurogroup

Macro/Political:

  • Greece’s Minister of Economy and Finance Kyriakos Pierrakakis has been elected President of the Eurogroup. He will assume office on 12 December 2025 and will serve a two-and-a-half-year term. Among others, President of the European Council António Costa wrote on X that Greece has come a long way over the past ten years, and that the election of Kyriakos Pierrakakis is a meaningful recognition of that progress. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said it was a proud day for Greece, describing the election as a shining acknowledgment of the country’s positive trajectory.

  • Farmers remained at roadblocks across the country today, holding local assemblies ahead of a nationwide meeting of blockade representatives scheduled for Saturday in Nikaia. This assembly may appoint a committee to represent all farmers if a meeting with the government is arranged. Furthermore, farmers from Macedonia were expected to move toward the port of Thessaloniki today in an effort to block it, escalating their protest.

CYPRUS

Macro/Political: 

  • President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman held a meeting under the auspices of UN Cyprus envoy Maria Holguin, during which they discussed a number of confidence building initiatives, the UN said in a statement. According to the UN, the meeting took place in a positive atmosphere, with the two leaders exchanging views on several issues and reaffirming that the ultimate goal remains a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus issue.
    Furthermore, Christodoulides and Erhurman agreed to work on a series of trust-building measures, including discussions on the opening of new crossing points, the Halloumi/Hellim file, and the construction of pipelines from the Mia Milia/Haspolat Water Treatment Plant.
