Greece’s State Budget Deficit Stands at EUR 508mn

Macro/Political:

  • Preliminary data released by the MoF showed that the State Budget balance on a modified cash basis for January – August 2026 presented a deficit of EUR 508mn, against a target of a deficit of EU1,611mn and a surplus of EUR 1,964mn for the same period of 2025. The State Budget Primary Balance amounted to a surplus of EUR 6,500mn, against the primary surplus target of EUR 4,989mn and a primary surplus of EUR 8,499mn in the same period of last year. It is noted that an amount of EUR 573 mn relating to time differentiation of PIB payments and an amount of EUR 618 mn relating to time differentiation of transfers to General Government entities, which do not affect the General Government’s result in fiscal terms, as well as, an amount of EUR 135 mn from the 2nd instalment of the price for granting the license to operate a casino in Elliniko, which is fiscally recorded during the concession years.
    For January – July 2026, State Budget net revenues amounted to EUR 51,137mn, showing an increase of EUR 2,297mn against the target. State Budget expenditures amounted to EUR 51,825mn, EUR 1,195mn higher than the target.

  • Former spokesperson of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party, Ilias Kasidiaris, was released from Domokos Prison yesterday after completing his sentence for his role in a criminal organisation. During his speech to the press, Kasidiaris referred to an unspecified new powerful national party, similar to those dominating the rest of Europe, that would prepare the ground for his political comeback. He claimed that his goal is to rid the country of what he described as the most corrupt government of the post-dictatorship era, amid cheers from dozens of people gathered around him.

  • GEK TERNA posted adjusted net profits of EUR 83.4 mn in 1H26, representing an increase of 22.1% y-o-y. Adjusted EBITDA also increased by 12.2% year-on-year to EUR 356.3mn, with the respective margin improving to 17% from 16.2% in the corresponding period of the previous year.
