Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides visits Kyiv ahead of Cyprus’ EU Council Presidency

- Former prime minister Alexis Tsipras presented his political memoir “Ithaki” yesterday at the Pallas Theater in Athens, in an event that not only reflected on his years in office but also signaled his intention to form a new party. Mr. Tsipras used the presentation to outline the “next day” for Greece, emphasizing the urgent need for a new mindset and a different collective political culture. His message focused on reinvigorating citizen engagement in politics. In his address, he delivered a full-frontal critique of the conservative government, calling for “resistance to the absolutism of the oligarchy and kleptocracy that governs today.”
- Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis addressed delays in farmer payments, urging farmers not to resort to disruptive protests such as roadblocks, airport closures, or customs office shutdowns. Speaking at a meeting of the Government Council for Economic Policy, Mr. Mitsotakis said that such extreme actions are not helpful. He also highlighted that total payments to farmers in 2025 will increase by more than EUR 500mn compared with 2024, rising from EUR 3.1 bn to EUR 3.7 bn.

- In October 2025, the weighted average interest rate on new deposits stood at 0.32%, while the corresponding rate on new loans decreased to 4.45%. The interest rate spread between new deposits and loans decreased to 4.13 percentage points.

- President Nikos Christodoulides travelled to Kyiv for a working visit as part of preparations for Cyprus’ upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU. The visit comes amid key developments in Ukraine and underscores Cyprus’ intention to actively support European priorities and reaffirm its solidarity with Kyiv. During talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky, Mr. Christodoulides is expected to reiterate Cyprus’ commitment to international law and its unwavering respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, principles tied to Cyprus’ own historical experience. Discussions will also cover the priorities of Cyprus’ EU Presidency, with the Ukrainian issue set to feature prominently. Mr. Christodoulides is also expected to stress the need for stricter action against sanctions circumvention and for a unified, transparent and consistent approach among EU member states.
- According to seasonally adjusted data released by CyStat, in November 2025 the number of registered unemployed persons in Cyprus decreased to 10.078 compared to 9.723 in previous month.

- The Cyprus Composite Leading Economic Index (CCLEI) 1 recorded a year-over-year increase of 1.8% in November 2, 2025. This growth rate is close to the levels of previous months, as the year-over-year growth of the Index was 1.9% in October and 1.8% in September 2025.
