Cyprus fiscal balance posted a surplus of EUR 594.3mn

Macro/Political:

  • The Greek PDMA announced that during the 13W T-Bills auction of EUR 400mn which took place yesterday, the total bids reached EUR 946 mn and the amount finally accepted was EUR 500mn at a uniform yield of 1.95% (vs 1.74 % in the previous 13W T-Bills auction in January 2026).

Markets:

  • Metlen reported net profit after minorities of EUR 314 mn for FY25, compared to EUR 615 mn in the previous year (-49% y-o-y). EBITDA also declined to EUR 753 mn, from EUR 1,080 mn in 2024 (-30% y-o-y). The decrease in EBITDA reflects previously stated project execution related losses, mainly associated with the Protos project in the UK, which resulted in cost overruns and scheduling delays.

CYPRUS

Macro/Political:

  • Preliminary data released by CyStat showed that the General Government fiscal balance for the period of January- February 2026 presented a surplus of EUR 594.3mn (1.5% of GDP) compared to a surplus of EUR 663.4mn (1.8% of GDP) in the same period of 2025. Primary balance recorded a surplus of EUR 662.4mn versus a surplus of EUR 731.6mn in the corresponding period of 2025. During Jan- Feb 2026 total expenditure increased by EUR 92.5 mn (+4.6%) to EUR 2,177mn from EUR 2,024.5 mn in the corresponding period of 2025. Total revenue increased by EUR 23.4mn (+0.9%) to EUR 2,711.3 mn compared to EUR 2,687.9mn in the same period of 2024. Particularly, in February 2026 the General government fiscal balance presented a surplus of EUR 27.9mn (Primary balance surplus EUR 60.3mn).

  • According to statements by Finance Minister Makis Keravnos in his speech at the 15th Nicosia Economic Congress, the public debt-to-GDP ratio is expected to decline closer to 50%. Furthermore, Keravnos noted that despite the complex global macroeconomic environment, the Cypriot economy remains on a positive trajectory, with growth in 2025 been at 3.8%.

  • During a discussion with representatives of the business community at the 16th Nicosia Economic Congress, President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides noted that discussions will take place with ENI and Total to reach an agreement by the end of April on the exploitation of Cypriot Natural gas by 2027.
