GREECE

Macro/Political:

  • Greece and Egypt reaffirmed the strategic nature of their relationship during talks between PM Mitsotakis and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, followed by a trilateral meeting with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides. It is important to note that the discussions took place against the backdrop of broader regional developments, including the Mecca Agreement, and were presented as confirmation that the core of Greek-Egyptian relations remain unchanged. Mitsotakis also used the meeting to send a message to Turkey, saying that Greece threatens no one and seeks stability through functional relations based on international law. He added that “stability does not in any case mean retreat or tolerance of faits accomplis. Therefore, Greece is neither afraid to defend its positions with confidence nor to engage in dialogue.”El-Sisi placed particular emphasis on the GREGY electricity interconnection project, cooperation in the natural gas sector, and coordination among the three countries on defence and security issues.
