Greece’s GDP Growth Stands at 1.9%

Macro/Political:

  • The Greek government on Monday detailed a broad package of tax cuts, wage increases, and housing and investment measures announced by PM Mitsotakis over the weekend. According to Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis and his team, the package has four main priorities: increasing disposable income, boosting private and public investment, strengthening social policies focused on demographics and health, and reducing energy costs. The government also added that it aims for the average wage to increase to EUR 1,800 by 2030, annual economic growth to remain above 2%, and investment to increase by more than 20%. The measures are expected to have a total fiscal cost of EUR 2.2bn in 2027 and EUR 3.5bn by 2030.
  • According to latest seasonally adjusted data from ELSTAT, Greece GDP in 2Q26 in volume terms increased by 0.3% (q-o-q), while it increased by 1.9% (y-o-y).

  • The trade balance in July 2026 presented a deficit of EUR 3,108.8mn compared to a deficit of EUR 3,013.1mn in July 2025, recording an increase of 3.2%. The total value of imports amounted to EUR 8,182.1mn (+10.7% y-o-y) while the total value of exports was EUR 5,073.3mn (+15.9% y-o-y). The deficit of the trade balance, for the 7-month period from January to July 2026 amounted to EUR 19,142.7 mn in comparison with EUR 19,900.9 mn for the corresponding period of the year 2026, recording a drop of 3.8%.

  • In August 2026, the Athens International airport’s passenger traffic amounted to 4.02 million, 3.7% higher than August 2025. During January -August of 2026, the airport’s passenger traffic reached 23.7 mn, above the 2025 levels by 4.4%.

  • GEK TERNA announced that it has been selected as the temporary contractor in two Public Private Partnership projects in Northern Greece, with a total investment of approx. EUR 560 mn. GEK TERNA will undertake their design, construction and financing, through a combination of equity and debt capital, as well as their operation and maintenance throughout the contractual period.

CYPRUS

Macro/Political:

  • Cyprus, Greece and Egypt’s leaders will hold a trilateral meeting today in El Alamein to discuss geopolitical developments in the region and ways to further strengthen trilateral relations. The three leaders will also discuss the Mecca Agreement, signed in August by Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. The meeting will start at 1pm and will be followed by statements to the press.
