  • Greece is set to sign a EUR 3.1bn defence agreement with Israel today in Tel Aviv, in a major deal that will provide Greece with its first integrated, multilayered air defence network. The agreement, negotiated over three years, covers the acquisition and deployment of several Israeli-made air defence systems. The systems will be delivered to the Greek armed forces in stages and are expected to become fully operational within 35 months. Defence Minister Nikos Dendias on Sunday described the project as an important component of the government’s broader effort to overhaul the armed forces. The “Achilles Shield” is part of the military reform programme known as “Agenda 2030.” Dendias said the programme is moving Greece “into a new reality” and adopting “a new approach to defence and deterrence.”
