Macro/Political:
- Pressure on the Greek government reached a peak during a heated parliamentary debate on the rule of law, as Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis clashed sharply with opposition leaders over the OPEKEPE farm subsidy scandal.
Mitsotakis accused the opposition of attempting to sow political division at a time when unity is needed, while urging the European Public Prosecutor’s Office to accelerate its investigation and avoid selective leaks that could undermine stability. He argued that the opposition is “rehashing causes of division” and fostering what he described as a “toxic cesspool” that is drowning society.
Opposition figures responded forcefully. Nikos Androulakis, leader of PASOK, accused the prime minister of hypocrisy, stating that “the architect of toxicity is talking about toxicity,” and renewed calls for the government to resign and call early elections, describing the OPEKEPE scandal as deeply blue. Similarly, Sokratis Famellos of SYRIZA echoed these criticisms, arguing that a vote of no confidence is now imperative and accusing Mitsotakis of violating constitutional norms.
