January Inflation at 2.8%, in Greece and Cyprus at 1.7%

GREECE

Macro/Political:

  • Data released by Eurostat showed that the annual inflation in Greece is expected to be 2.8% in January 2026 from 2.9% in December 2025.

  • In December 2025, the weighted average interest rate on new deposits stood at 0.31%, while the corresponding rate on new loans decreased to 4.24%. The interest rate spread between new deposits and loans decreased at 3.93 percentage points.

  • In January 2026, the Athens International airport’s passenger traffic amounted to 1,992.535 million, 8.6% higher than January 2025.

Markets:

  • According to Capital.gr, CPLP is expected to raise EUR 250m through a bond auction. Proceeds from the issuance are expected to be used to refinance the EUR 150m bond raised by the company in 2021, which matures in October 2026, while the remaining funds are expected to be used for the acquisition of LNG vessels.

  • Data released by Eurostat showed that the annual inflation in Cyprus is expected to be 1.7% in January from 0.1% in December 2025.

  • According to seasonally adjusted data released by CyStat, in January 2025 the number of registered unemployed persons in Cyprus decreased to 9.848 persons compared to 9.863 in previous month.

  • The Council of Ministers decided to extend the reduced VAT rate on electricity to 9% until 31 March 2027. According to Finance Minister Makis Keravnos, the total cost of continuing the measure is expected to amount to EUR 40 mn.
